Help an Impulsive Child Maintain Control

Help an Impulsive Child Maintain Control

Impulsive kids have a hard time at school. They have trouble waiting for their turn or standing in line for long. They get impatient and sometimes cause trouble. They blurt out answers to the teacher’s questions at inappropriate times. They do and say things without thinking about consequences. Their impulsiveness makes it hard to keep friends.

Here’s how you can help an impulsive child:
    Exercise with your mentee.
  • Provide structure and routines during time together to increase stable behavior.
  • Set rules and explain the consequences for breaking them.
  • Praise and reward your mentee for thinking before acting.
  • Teach your mentee how to verbalize feelings before losing control.
  • Teach ways to settle down, like counting to 10, taking deep breaths or saying the alphabet.
