Is There Anything Normal for Adolescents?

Adolescence can be a challenging time for mentees and mentors. The changes that happen during early adolescence are challenging for everyone. It’s helpful to know that the following things are considered normal:
  • Struggling with a sense of identity.
  • Self-consciousness.
  • Being influenced by peers.
  • Moodiness.
  • Wanting more freedom from parents.
  • Thinking more about the present than the future.
  • Being less affectionate with parents.
  • Criticizing parents.
  • Testing rules.
  • Changing friends often.

On the bright side, keep in mind that lots of good things happen during adolescence. For example, most kids develop a more effective conscience. They’re able to express themselves better. And many enjoy learning more.
