Elementary students are learning a lot more than academics. They are also learning the social skills—such as how to be respectful—that help make a classroom comfortable and productive. You can help your mentee learn what respect feels like. When he makes mistakes, don’t point them out in front of others. That will only make him feel ashamed and resentful. It won’t teach him how to be polite.
It’s better to ask yourself what your mentee needs to learn. Then find an appropriate time to teach him those skills one-on-one.
