Help Your Child Recognize Strengths, Boost Self-Esteem

Help Your Child Recognize Strengths, Boost Self-Esteem

Helping mentees recognize their strengths is a great way to boost their self-esteem. Here are some simple ideas you might try:
  • Keep an accomplishments box. Cover a shoebox with colored paper. Cut a hole in the top. Label the box with your mentee’s name. Throughout the year, write down your mentee's accomplishments. Don’t wait for the big things. Keep track of the smaller things, too. Around your mentee's birthday, look through the box together. Have your mentee make a list of everything she’s done.
  • Send family mail. Choose two days a month when you will write your mentee a letter. You can write about anything. But it will be best if you focus on the positive. Mail it to him.
  • Play "What’s in a name?" Go to the library with your mentee. Do some research on the meaning of your mentee's name. Then create a project together that shows off what you’ve learned.
