Wednesday's Child: Taofeeq (Mentee Turned Mentor)

Taofeeq Olatinwo“Mentoring is meaningful for me because I can share what I have experienced with other skilled immigrants. And the learning is two ways. Mentoring helps me to develop other people on the job. What I practice outside the office helps me to be more effective and efficient on the job.”

My international advantage

As an IT professional and consultant, I traveled extensively for Shell and consulted in the United States, Europe, Australia, China and the Middle East. I also worked in the Netherlands for  four years. As a Nigerian, I can say with confidence that I know how to work with people of all cultures and that has to be an asset in this country.

How I approached my job search

First I registered at COSTI, where they really helped me with my resume. I had 20 pages to start with! That is the norm in Europe. Together we got it down to three pages.

What I learned from my mentor

My mentor explained Canadian culture and the workplace. I believe this insight has been essential in helping me integrate in all the jobs I’ve had since.

Breakthrough moment

COSTI told me about a recruitment fair  they were  organizing for  top companies in Canada. My COSTI supporters encouraged me to ask questions at the end of the interview to clarify any questions I had and to show I was really interested in the job. I hadn’t ever thought that I should ask questions for that reason. I started with Enbridge in March 2008 as a project manager and within three months I was a senior manager. That job and additional Canadian certifications helped me land future roles with SaskPower and Hewlett-Packard.

Message for skilled immigrants looking for a job

Tailor your resume. If you secure a job interview, then practice with someone who knows your field, like a mentor, and get feedback. Be confident. Sometimes we underestimate how important confidence is, especially in other cultures.

Why I returned to become a mentor

I felt that I had gained a lot from my mentorship, so I have to give back and say thank you.
