Wednesday's Child: Nitin (Mentee Turned Mentor)

Nitin Ovid

“I think my biggest learning about how a job search here differs from one in India is that you have to be able to sell yourself. Over there you are more likely to get a job based on who you know. That will help get you in the door here, but then you are competing against several strong candidates and their credentials.”

Why Canada?

While originally from India, I had traveled a lot for work and felt that North America would be the right place to settle my family.

My international advantage

I bring over 15 years of experience in international freight and logistics, mostly from South East Asia. Most North American companies are eyeing this part of the world as our local economy struggles to get back on its feet. I speak four additional languages and have an in depth understanding of how business is conducted in that part of the world. I was also previously based in the US for just under two years, so I’ve experienced business practices all over.

What I learned from my mentor

Rishi and I focused mostly on how to interview. He emphasized that relationships are what can get you in the door, but then you have to prove yourself. I learned how to present and market my experience.

Why I returned to become a mentor

Even with my strong international experience it still took me seven months to find a job. I wanted to give back and help someone else find their first break. I talk to my mentee about patience and believing in yourself, instead of taking a survival job.
