Mentor Monday: Jim's Experience

mentorstories2.JPG
Xavier and I were matched through the Success Journey program in March of this year. During one of our first visits, I brought in a photo book of the different periods of my life: some Navy pictures, Triathlon pictures (25 years and 40 lbs. ago) and family pictures. The following week, he proudly announced that he was on the Cycling Team. From that point on, we had a real connection. We talked the mechanical failures he experienced during races, his teammates’ attitudes and racing strategy (avoid crashes at all costs!). We traveled to Boulder, Golden, Salida and Denver (State Criterium Championships). At the end of the season, the results showed Xavier placing 6 out of 37 riders for the Junior Men’s Best All Around Rider. After viewing his results, the only thing he would comment to me was, “gonna get better next race”. As long as he can apply that attitude toward everything else in life, success will surely follow. It’s been a pleasure being his mentor!
