Mentor Monday: Meet LaToya

Q. Who is your mentee?
A. NaTyhia, age 13

Q. How long have you been a mentor?
A. 2.5 years

Q. What is the best thing about mentoring?
A. There are many things I love about being a mentor. The best part is that being NaTyhia's mentor is like having another little sister. She is an amazing young person and it is a privilege to watch her grow and blossom.

Q. What has the biggest challenge been?
A. When I started out as a mentor, NaTyhia lived about 2 miles away so it was a bit easier to connect on a weekly basis. Now that she lives further away, I have had to be a little more creative with planning time with her. It still works out, but it just requires more effort. For the most part, we are able to connect on a bi-weekly basis, but she knows if she needs me, I am just a phone call away.

Q. What made you become a mentor?
A. I have been blessed to have lots of positive role models and mentors throughout my life and wanted to pay it forward by supporting a young person just like others have supported me.

Q. Why would you recommend someone become a mentor?
A. Anyone who believes in young people and wants to make a difference in their lives should consider becoming a mentor. Kids today face many challenges and pressures and I believe mentors can help them navigate through their adolescent years.

Q. What was the biggest surprise about mentoring?
A. I was surprised by how perfectly matched we were. NaTyhia reminds me so much of myself at her age. It didn't take long for her to become like part of our family.
